Restoring Microsoft Exchange: An Overview

Successfully restoring your Microsoft Exchange Server data is a multi-step process. The exact procedure is determined by your Exchange version and the Exchange data you choose to restore.

Determining the restore procedure to use

The restore process may require that you perform preliminary steps, then restore your data through MyLiveVault, and follow up with some additional steps. For example, if you are running Exchange 2000, you must first dismount the storage groups that you will be restoring.

To select the appropriate restore procedure, select your Exchange version:

Automatic restore file selection

When you choose the restore option Restore my Microsoft Exchange data, MyLiveVault automatically selects to restore the current version of all the Exchange files and directories that are currently selected for backup on your Exchange backup configuration.

This option is only available for Agent version 3.6 and later.

You can review the selected files, or optionally modify the file selections.

Important:  If you choose to restore a historic version, MyLiveVault will warn you if the historic version you chose predates the file selection rules on your existing Exchange backup configuration. In this case, MyLiveVault cannot guarantee which files/directories were being backed up at the chosen historic point in time. You must modify the restore file selections appropriately.

Beyond Exchange data restore option

Use the restore option Restore my Microsoft Exchange data if you wish to restore all or some of your backed up Exchange data. However, if you are recovering your entire Exchange server or only deleted Exchange messages or mailboxes, other procedures are more appropriate:
