Restoring the Remote Installation Service (RIS) Folder
The Windows 2000/2003 Remote Installation Service (RIS) stores data, such as executable
images, in the RemoteInstall folder. This folder is shared as REMINST. For more
information about RIS, refer to your Windows 2000/2003 documentation.
Restoring the RemoteInstall folder requires performing some manual steps in
Windows 2000/2003, in addition to using MyLiveVault to restore the folder
itself. Refer to your Windows 2000/2003 documentation for information about
stopping and starting services, sharing
folders, and using RIS.
To restore the RemoteInstall folder
Stop the following services:
Stop sharing the RemoteInstall folder, REMINST.
In MyLiveVault, request to restore the
RemoteInstall folder. Use the following restore options:
To handle filename conflicts, choose the overwrite option Always overwrite existing file with restored
file.
Choose the security descriptors option Restore the original NTFS security
descriptors.
Note: LiveVault Online Backup Service backs up and restores the full original files (not the link
files) for Single Instance Store (SIS) files. Thus it is possible for you to
run out of disk space during a restore if adequate disk space is not available
for all the restored SIS files.
After the folder is restored, share the restored RemoteInstall folder as REMINST.
Note: The security settings and permissions will have been restored
with the
folder.
Restart these services:
Alternatively, you can restart your computer.
Verify the RemoteInstall folder was restored successfully. For example,
install Windows 2000 Professional from the Remote Install server.
