Restoring Files and Directories, or Databases

Follow these steps to restore files and directories, databases and applications.

In addition, if you are restoring databases or applications, you also need to review Restoring Databases or Applications: Key Considerations before you start the restore.

To restore files and directories, or databases

  1. On the MyLiveVault Home page, the All Computers form lists all the computers on your company account. Click Backup/Restore in the Action column for the computer whose data you want to restore.

  2. On the Computer Information form, click the Restore tab.

  3. In the New Restore section, click Restore files & directories, or databases.

  4. Click Restore.

  5. On the Computer Restore form, type a name for the restore job in the Name of restore box.

  6. In the Files to Restore tab on the Computer Restore form, specify the data that you want to restore:

    1. Specify the file version that you want to restore, either current or historic.

Note:  LiveVault Online Backup Service guarantees the current version and one historic version per day will be backed up and available for restore. However, you may have more historic versions available.

Important: For each file displayed, the size and modified date are shown. However, the modified date reflects when the file was last closed. This may not necessarily reflect the last time you modified the file (or the "modified" date you see on for the file on the Agent computer itself) nor the currency of the backed up version. For example, some database files will remain open for long periods of time (for example, weeks) yet during that time transactions have been committed to the database and LiveVault Online Backup Service has backed up those transactions and has at least one good historic copy each day. In addition some applications will keep  files open on the Agent and as a result the modified date in MyLiveVault will not reflect the actual last modified date you may expect.

    2. Specify whether you want to view, select and restore deleted files.

    3. Specify the files and directories that you want to restore. You can use either of these methods to specify the files:

  7. In the Delivery tab on the Computer Restore form, choose the delivery method for the restored data.

Important: If you are restoring a database, application data, or large amount of data, only select the Network delivery option if you are sure that you have sufficient bandwidth and the connection stability to restore your data. Otherwise an additional restore using media may be required, delaying your restore.

  8. Based on the delivery method you chose, configure the following additional information:

  9. When you are done configuring your restore request, click Save.

  10. Review the information in the Computer Restore form's Properties and Specifications columns.

  11. Do one of the following:

    • Click Submit to accept the restore request and start the restore process.

    • Click Back to make changes to the restore request.

    • Click Cancel if you do not want to submit the restore request.

  12. Note the identification number assigned to this request, and click Done. This number is used in MyLiveVault with the restore job name you specified to uniquely identify this restore job.

  13. Processing of the restore request starts automatically. You can track its progress in MyLiveVault. Processing is based on the delivery method chosen:

    • A Network delivered restore immediately starts restoring the data over the Internet. After the restore job completes, we will send an e-mail to the user who requested the restore notifying the requestor that the restore is complete.

    • Processing of a Media delivered restore starts immediately. We will send an e-mail to the user who requested the restore notifying the requestor that the data has been restored to media and the media has been shipped.

    • Processing of an Automatic delivered restore starts immediately. Once we determine the appropriate delivery method (Network or Media), we will send an e-mail to the user who requested the restore notifying the requestor of the delivery method. We will also send another appropriate e-mail:

      • After the restore job completes for data restored over the Internet.

      • When the media has been shipped for data restored on media.
