Tracking the Progress of a New or Changed Backup Configuration

When you create a new database backup configuration, or change which files get backed up by an existing configuration, the computer will be in an initial backup synchronization state again in which only those files which have not been previously backed up by any configuration will be backed up in full.

This initial synchronization runs until the first copy of all newly selected data has been replicated to the backup server. The time required for the initial synchronization depends on the amount of data that you are backing up for the first time and the bandwidth available from your computer.

After this initial synchronization completes, we will send an e-mail to the computer's primary technical contact notifying the contact of the backup status. At that time, we consider the computer to again be protected. You can then safely perform restores.

To track the progress of a new or changed backup configuration

Depending on the level of detail you want to view, MyLiveVault provides multiple ways to track the progress of the new or changed backup configuration:

  1. View a high-level roll-up of the backup status of all your computers with new or changed backup configurations on the All Computers form.

In the Status column on this form, you will see the following backup status information for the computers with new or changed configurations:

    • Current overall status Testing configuration and initial synchronization (for 24 hours) then Initial synchronization for the computer while a new or changed configuration runs for the first time, or Initial synchronization pending if the configuration is not yet scheduled to run.

    • Schedule information indicating when backup will run on the computer, for example, 7x24 or Evenings/Weekends.

    • Graphical progress bar while the initial synchronization is running.

    • Backup state information showing the number of backup configurations currently running, the estimated time to completion for the initial synchronization of the backups currently running, and that other backup configurations are scheduled to run their initial synchronizations (if not currently running). For example,  1 of 2 backups currently running; synchronization estimated complete in 1 hour 23 minutes; 1 scheduled to execute.

Because this is a roll-up of the status of all configurations for a computer, the displayed status information will indicate an initial synchronization until all new or changed configurations have completed their initial synchronization. For example, if one configuration has completed its initial synchronization, and a second configuration is still running its initial synchronization, then the status displayed for this computer will indicate that initial synchronization is still running. Thus, this status will indicate that initial synchronization is complete for the computer only after all new or changed backup configurations have completed their initial synchronization.

  2. View a more detailed roll-up of the backup status for a computer in the Summary tab on the Computer Information form.

In the Backup Summary section, you will see the following backup status information for that computer:

    • Current overall status Testing configuration and initial synchronization (for 24 hours) then Initial synchronization for the computer while a new or changed configuration runs for the first time, or Initial synchronization pending if the configuration is not yet scheduled to run.

    • Schedule information indicating when backup will run on the computer, for example, 7x24 or Evenings/Weekends.

    • Graphical progress bar while the initial synchronization is running.

    • Amount of data backed up so far from this computer, of the total amount of data selected to be backed up, for example, Backing up 11 of 21 files (41.3 MB of 95 MB).

In the Bandwidth and Latency section, you can choose to view either a Bandwidth Usage chart or a Backup Latency chart:

    • Bandwidth Usage chart indicating the amount of bandwidth your computer is using to back up the selected files.

    • Backup Latency chart indicating the average amount of time that has passed from the time a file was updated on your computer to the time it was backed up to the backup server.

Because this is a roll-up of the status of all configurations for the computer, the displayed status information will indicate an initial synchronization until all new or changed configurations have completed their initial synchronization.

  3. View a summary of the status of the new or changed configurations in the Backup tab on the Computer Information form.

In the Backup Configuration section, locate the name of a new or changed configuration. You will see the following summary information to help you track its progress:

    • The status of the configuration, which is one of the following:

      • Initial synchronization if backup for the configuration is currently running.

      • Initial synchronization pending if the configuration has not yet started running.

    • Backup state information showing Estimate complete in <time> for the initial synchronization (if the backup is running) or text indicating when the backup is scheduled to run.

    • Graphical progress bar while the initial synchronization is running.

    • Date and time of the most current backup version for this backup configuration, which is displayed after the initial synchronization completes. This indicates the backup version that would be restored if you chose to restore current version.

  4. View more details about the status of the new or changed configuration on the Backup Configuration Details form. You will see the following details for tracking the configuration's progress:

    • Current status of the configuration, which is one of the following:

      • Initial synchronization if backup for the configuration is currently running.

      • Initial synchronization pending if the configuration has not yet started running.

    • Amount of data backed up so far by this configuration, of the total amount of data selected to be backed up, for example, Backing up 4 of 10 files (13.3 MB of 25 MB).

    • Date and time of the most current backup version for this backup configuration, which is displayed after the initial synchronization completes. This indicates the backup version that would be restored if you chose to restore current version.

    • Graphical progress bar while the initial synchronization is running.

    • Backup state information showing Estimate complete in <time> for the initial synchronization (if the backup is running) or text indicating when the backup is scheduled to run.

    • Files selected for backup by this configuration.

    • Schedule information indicating the backup type and when the configuration will run, for example, 7x24 or Evenings/Weekends.

    • Option for the Files and Directories backup configuration indicating whether the Backup the Registry/System State will be backed up.

    • Who created the configuration and when.
