Setting Up a Files and Directories Backup Configuration

A general Files and Directories backup configuration must be created for each computer. By default, this configuration will back up all the files and directories on the computer, as well as the Windows System State or registry. However, it will not back up those files and directories that you specifically exclude from backup, or those files and directories that you specify on other backup configurations. In addition, there are some files that LiveVault Online Backup Service will automatically exclude from backup, and some items that it does not support; for more information, see Automatic and Recommended Backup Exclusions and Objects That Cannot Be Backed Up.

This backup configuration will always appear for a computer, even if you specifically exclude all files and directories from the backup configuration.

Note: If you are running anti-virus software or certain other applications, additional configuration is required to ensure successful backup operations. See Configuring Your Backup: Guidelines for more information.

To set up a Files and Directories backup configuration

  1. In the Files to Backup tab on the Computer Backup form, specify the files that you want this configuration to back up. You can use either of these methods to specify the files:

  2. Specify whether to back up the Windows System State or registry:

    • Select the Backup the Registry/System State check box to back up the System State/registry. It is selected by default.

    • Clear the check box if you do not want to back up the System State/registry.

Important: It is important to back up the System State/registry for your computer. If you do not back it up, you may not be able to restore your databases or applications.

  3. In the Schedule tab, create a schedule for the Files and Directories backup configuration.

  4. Click Save.

  5. Review the information in the Computer Backup form's Properties and Specifications columns

  6. Do one of the following:

    • Click Submit to accept the backup configuration.

    • Click Back to make changes to the configuration.
