Creating a Microsoft Exchange Backup Configuration

This procedure applies to LiveVault Online Backup Service Agent version 4.0 or later. If you are running an earlier Agent version, see Creating a Microsoft Exchange Backup Configuration (for version 3.6 or earlier).

If you are running Microsoft Exchange Server on this computer, you will create a special database backup configuration specifically to protect Exchange.

LiveVault Online Backup Service automatically detects that Exchange is installed on the computer, identifies the version, and can automatically generate and maintain special database backup configurations to protect the full Exchange server (that is, the entire computer) or the Exchange data only. LiveVault Online Backup Service then determines the correct set of Exchange files and directories to back up to ensure the application data is accurately protected. If you specify that you want to automatically back up the entire Exchange server, LiveVault Online Backup Service also sets up your Files and Directories backup configuration to back up the entire computer, including the Windows System State/registry. You can then set a schedule indicating when the automatic backup configurations should run.

Optionally, you can instead specify that you want to define your own custom Exchange backup configuration. To define this custom configuration, you specify the Exchange files and directories to back up, and set a schedule indicating when Exchange should be backed up.

Important: If you are defining your own custom Exchange backup configuration, follow the guidelines in the appropriate procedure for your Exchange version:

Note: It is not necessary to exclude the Exchange files from the Files and Directories backup configuration.

To create an Exchange backup configuration

  1. On the Microsoft Exchange Backup form, specify how you want to back up Exchange on the computer:

    • Select Automatic Exchange Data backup only to have LiveVault Online Backup Service automatically generate and maintain back up for Exchange on this computer.

    • Select Automatic entire Exchange Server backup to have LiveVault Online Backup Service automatically generate and maintain back up for this entire computer. An Exchange backup configuration and the Files and Directories backup configuration for this computer will be generated for you.

Note: In general we recommend choosing this option as it is the most efficient and easy method to ensure your computer is fully backed up and recoverable.

    • Select Custom Exchange Data backup to define your own custom Exchange backup configuration.

  2. Click Next (located below the Microsoft Exchange Backup form) to continue configuring backup for your computer.

  3. If you chose either Automatic Exchange Data backup only or Custom Exchange Data backup, you must now set up your Files and Directories backup configuration.

Note: If you chose Automatic entire Exchange Server backup, the Files and Directories backup configuration has been automatically configured for you.

  4. In the Files to Backup tab on the Computer Backup form, do one of the following:

    • If you chose either Automatic Exchange Data backup only or Automatic entire Exchange Server backup, on the Files to Backup tab click View Files to Backup to review the Exchange files and directories that will be backed up.

Note: You cannot edit the Exchange files and directories selections for an automatic Exchange backup configuration.

    • If you chose Custom Exchange Data backup, on the Files to Backup tab specify the Exchange files and directories to back up. You can use either of these methods:

  5. In the Schedule tab, create a schedule for the backup configuration.

Note: If you chose Automatic entire Exchange Server backup, the same schedule applies to both your Exchange and your Files and Directories backup configurations.

  6. In the Options tab, review and modify (if applicable) the Exchange application options for your Exchange version (for example, circular logging, or mailbox and message retention).

  7. Click Save.

  8. Review the information in the Computer Backup form's Properties and Specifications columns

Note: If the backup configuration option is Automatic entire Exchange Server backup, you will review information for both the Exchange and the Files and Directories backup configurations.

    Do one of the following:

    • Click Submit to accept the backup configuration.

    • Click Back to make changes to the configuration.

To skip creating an Exchange backup configuration

  1. On the Microsoft Exchange Backup form, select No Exchange Backup.

  2. Click Next (located below the Microsoft Exchange Backup form) to skip creating an Exchange backup configuration and continue defining backup for the computer.
