Windows Fix Required to Avoid Plug and Play Restore Failure (A047)

This applies to servers running both:

  • A LiveVault Online Backup Service Agent prior to version 4.2

  • Either of the following:

    • Windows 2000 (all versions) SP1, SP2, SP3

    • Windows XP, Windows XP SP1

Problem

Microsoft has identified a problem in which only a portion of the Plug and Play database may be restored, resulting in missing or incorrect network adapters following a System State restore.

Details about this problem and its cause are addressed in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q810161 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810161).

In a LiveVault Online Backup Service Agent, this problem may be seen when performing a Disaster Recovery (DR) to a non-comparable computer. Following the System State restore in the DR process, you would restart the computer. In some cases, the computer may not restart correctly and would require manual intervention with Customer Service's assistance to troubleshoot and fix the device problem, or the computer may restart but network adapters may be missing or appear incorrectly in the Device Manager.

To avoid this problem

To avoid this problem, you must do one of the following:

  • Follow the steps in Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q810161 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810161) to modify the following registry key on your Agent computer:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\KeysNotToRestore

  • Install Windows 2000 SP4 from Microsoft on your Agent computer. (Windows 2000 SP4 includes the registry change.)

The next System State backup will incorporate the registry change. Note that restoring a System State version from prior to this registry change would continue to result in this problem.
