Computer Information: Summary tab

Purpose

Use this Summary tab on the Computer Information form to view a summary of the backup and restore status for the computer.

The status information displayed on this Summary tab is a "rollup" of the status of all backup configurations and restores for this computer. For the status of individual backup configurations or restore jobs, click the Backup tab or Restore tab, respectively.

Fields and Buttons Descriptions

Field/Button Description
Backup Summary
This is a status rollup of all the backup configurations for the computer. The status display is dynamic, indicating the progress of the initial synchronization (across all data under backup), then of the ongoing backup.

The rollup will always represent the "worst case" or "least complete" status of all the backup configurations for the computer. For example, if one configuration has completed its initial synchronization, and a second configuration is still running its initial synchronization, then the status displayed for this computer will indicate that initial synchronization is still running. Thus, this status will indicate that initial synchronization is complete for the computer only after all backup configurations have completed their initial synchronization.

The backup status information that is displayed follows this format:

Status
Schedule
Backup state and estimated time to completion (if initial synchronization is running)
Progress bar (if initial synchronization is running)
Backing up n files

The backup status information fields are described below.

Status This text and associated icon indicates the overall status of backup for this computer. For example:
  • Initial synchronization pending

This status is displayed during the period following the set up of the new computer's backup configurations and before the initial backup synchronization starts. It is also displayed if any backup configuration has been changed but the changed configuration has not yet started.

  •   Testing configuration & initial synchronization

This status is displayed during the initial backup synchronization for a new computer for a maximum of 24 hours.

If the initial synchronization is still running after 24 hours, this status changes to Initial synchronization.

This status indicates that LiveVault Online Backup Service is testing the computer configuration and backup configurations during the initial synchronization to determine whether or not the backup will be successful. During this time, LiveVault Online Backup Service is monitoring your backup for errors or indications that the backup may not be successful. For example, there may be issues if a computer is trying to back up too much data for the speed of your available Internet connection. If a problem is found, we will contact the primary technical contact for the computer.

Note: An initial synchronization may take a long time to complete, for example, several days, depending on the amount of data being backed up and the uplink speed of your Internet connection.

  • Initial synchronization

This status is displayed after 24 hours while the initial synchronization is running for the first time for any or all backup configurations on this computer. It is also displayed if someone changed which files or directories are being backed up under any configuration.

Note: An initial synchronization may take a long time to complete, for example, several days, depending on the amount of data being backed up and the uplink speed of your Internet connection.

  • Synchronizing

Following the completion of the initial synchronization, this status is displayed when any backup configuration is synchronizing. A synchronization runs each time a backup starts, for example, if you schedule backup to run nightly, instead of 7x24, or when an Agent reconnects following a prolonged disconnection from LiveVault Online Backup Service.

  • or System operating normally

Following the completion of the initial synchronization, this status is displayed when all backup configurations are running in continuous mode or are scheduled to run in the future.

  • Disconnected

This status is displayed if the computer has been disconnected from LiveVault Online Backup Service for more than 15 minutes.

  • Backup is suspended

This status is displayed while backup is temporarily stopped (suspended). Backup remains in this state until you resume it.

In addition, should a problem other than a disconnect occur which disrupts your service, a message is displayed here.

Schedule This text indicates when backup is defined to run on the computer.

If all backup configurations are set to run on the same schedule, then that schedule is displayed. For example:

  • 7x24

  • Evenings/Weekends

However, if configurations are set to run on different schedules, then Schedules vary is displayed here. For the specific schedules, you can click the Backup tab to view information about the individual configurations.

Backup state This text provides information about the state of backup on the system.

The following text is always displayed :

n of n backups currently running

This text specifies the number of backup configurations that are currently running out of the total number of backup configurations defined. For example, 2 of 2 backups currently running.

If appropriate, one or more of the following additional lines is appended to the above text:

  • n scheduled to execute

This text specifies the number of backup configurations that are scheduled to run in the future.

  • synchronization estimated complete in <time>

This text is displayed while an initial synchronization is running for all, or at least one of the backup configurations.

It specifies how long the initial synchronization will run until it completes for all configurations on this computer. If multiple backup configurations are running initial synchronizations, this is the estimated completion for the configuration that will take the longest to run.

An initial synchronization will run the first time a backup configuration runs, and also following a change to the list of files and directories that the configuration is to back up for a full backup of only those files which have not been previously backed up by any configuration.

The estimated completion information is based on a prescan of the data to be backed up, and is dynamically updated to maintain accuracy.

This estimate will be readjusted as necessary following disconnect and reconnect occurrences.

  • n suspended

This text specifies the number of backup configurations that have been suspended by Customer Service due to a backup issue (the issue and this action would have been previously discussed with either a technical contact for this computer or another representative of your company).

Progress bar This graphical progress bar indicates what percentage of the initial backup synchronization  has completed. The percentage is figured across all data being backed up for this computer.

This bar will not be displayed after initial synchronization completes.

Backing up n files (n MB) This text indicates the amount of data backed up from this computer. The unit of measurement will be megabyte (MB) or gigabyte (GB) as appropriate.
Restore Summary section
This section displays a count of the restore jobs that were submitted within the past week.
Restore job summary This text provides a count of the restore jobs that have run in the past week and their current or final status. The counts includes both Network restore jobs and Media restore jobs.

The following counts are provided:

  • n Restore Jobs Running

This indicates the number of restore jobs that are currently active.

  • n Restore Jobs Completed

This indicates the number of restore jobs that have completed in the past week.

  • n Restore Jobs Failed

This indicates the number of restore jobs that did not complete successfully.

Bandwidth and Latency section
Show: <24 hour | 7 day> <outbound | inbound> bandwidth The Bandwidth Usage chart indicates the amount of network bandwidth being consumed by LiveVault Online Backup Service for backup or for restore across time.

From the list of available charts, select the Bandwidth Usage chart that you want to view:

  • 24 hour outbound bandwidth (for backup bandwidth)

  • 7 day outbound bandwidth (for backup bandwidth)

  • 24 hour inbound bandwidth (for restore bandwidth)

  • 7 day inbound bandwidth (for restore bandwidth)

The outbound bandwidth charts show the amount of data transferred from your Agent computer to the backup server, primarily showing data being backed up.

The inbound bandwidth charts show the amount of data transferred from the backup server to your Agent computer, primarily showing data being restored.

However, you will also observe on the inbound bandwidth charts a minor amount of control data that is transferred during backup operations.

Show: <24 hour | 7 day> backup latency The Backup Latency chart indicates the average amount of time that has passed from the time a file was updated on your computer to the time it was backed up to the backup server. This indicates how current your backup copies are on the backup server.

From the list of available charts, select whether you want to view the latency chart for the past 24 hours (24 hour backup latency) or the past seven days (7 day backup latency).

Located above the Backup Latency chart is a bar graph summarizing the quality of the latency (good, fair, or poor) where:

  • Good = latency of zero to two hours
  • Fair = latency of two to five hours
  • Poor = latency of over five hours

If the latency is consistently high, then this may indicate that your Internet connection is too slow for the amount of data that is changing on your computer.

In some instances the text (insignificant latency recorded) is displayed. This indicates that you are not experiencing latency, for example if your Internet connection is very fast for the amount of data that is changing on your computer.
