All Computers / Computers

Purpose

Use this All Computers (or Computers <first - last>) form on the MyLiveVault Home page to view the current status of each of your computers that is in LiveVault Online Backup Service.

From this form you can:

  • Add a new computer to LiveVault Online Backup Service.

  • Download the LiveVault Online Backup Service software to install on a computer.

  • Configure backup for a computer.

  • View high-level backup status for each of your computers.

  • View high-level restore status for each of your computers.

  • Access more detailed backup and restore status information for a computer.

  • Access pages so you can view and edit the backup configuration for a computer.

  • Access pages so you can view and edit properties for a computer.

  • View notices from LiveVault Online Backup Service regarding service availability for each of your computers or your entire enterprise.

When the first user for your company account sees this form for the first time, there are no computers listed and the only action available is to add a computer (the Add Computer button is available).

On this form you will see the computers that are assigned to you to access and manage. If you are assigned all computers for your company account, then all computers are shown. If you are assigned a subset of the computers for your company account, then that subset of computers is shown. If you have not been assigned any computers, the following message is displayed on this form:

There are no computers assigned to you to manage. Please contact another administrator to have computers assigned to you.

The actions that you can perform on a computer are dependent on your assigned management capabilities and the computer's state. Each state is dependent on the completion of the prior state. For example, you can add a computer, but then the computer must be authorized for LiveVault Online Backup Service before you can download and install the software on it. A computer will naturally progress through the following states:

  • New computer is added to LiveVault Online Backup Service.

  • Computer is authorized for LiveVault Online Backup Service.

  • LiveVault Online Backup Service software is installed on the computer.

  • Backup is configured for the computer.

  • Backup continues to run according to the defined configuration.

The available actions and the corresponding states are described in the following Columns, Fields and Buttons Descriptions table, in the Action Column section.

Selecting the Computers to Display on This Form

Up to 10 computers can be displayed at one time on this form, with the computers listed in alphabetical order. If you have more than 10 computers in LiveVault Online Backup Service, for ease of use we instead display your computers in sets of 10, with each set shown on a separate page.

The title of this form will change to indicate that all your computers (up to 10) are shown on the single displayed form, or which subset of your computers (if you have over 10 computers) are currently displayed on the form.

Field Description
All Computers You have up to 10 computers in LiveVault Online Backup Service. All your computers are shown on the displayed form.
Computers <first - last> You have more than 10 computers in LiveVault Online Backup Service. A subset of your computers is shown on the displayed form.

The subset of computers is indicated in the drop-down list next to Computers. This list shows the subsets of your computers, organized by the names of the first and last computer in each set. For example, the list may include the entry Computer1 - Computer10, followed by the entry Computer11 - Computer 20, and so on.

To view a different page of computers, select the entry for the set containing the computers you wish to work with.

Columns, Fields and Buttons Descriptions

Computer Name column
This column displays the simple machine name of each of your computers that are in LiveVault Online Backup Service. Each computer is on a separate row in the table. Computers are arranged alphabetically.

Click the computer name to open the Computer Information form. Based on the current state of the computer, you can do all or a subset of the following: view details about the status of the computer, edit the backup configurations, restore data, and view or edit computer properties.

If a newer version of the Agent software is available for the computer, one of the following messages is displayed below the computer's name:

  • Update available. This message indicates that a newer version is available for you to download and install. Click this message to read what is new in the available version. You can then download and install the update at your convenience.

  • Update required! This message indicates that the version of the Agent software running on your computer must be upgraded to the newer version. Click this message to read about what is new in the available version, then download and install the update.

Status column
The Status column displays text that explains the current state of the computer in each row. Depending on the state of the particular computer, this text may describe:
  • The action you can currently take on the computer as the computer is initially being added to LiveVault Online Backup Service and is being configured.

  • The operational state of backup on the computer.

  • A summary of the restore jobs for the computer.

  • If errors or interruptions to LiveVault Online Backup Service occurred.

If backup has been configured for the computer, this column contains a status rollup of all the backup configurations for the computer. The status display is dynamic, indicating the progress of the initial synchronization (across all data under backup), then of the ongoing backup.

The rollup will always represent the "worst case" or "least complete" status of all the backup configurations for the computer. For example, if one configuration has completed its initial synchronization, and a second configuration is still running its initial synchronization, then the status displayed for this computer will indicate that initial synchronization is still running. Thus, this status will indicate that initial synchronization is complete for the computer only after all backup configurations have completed their initial synchronization.

The backup status information that is displayed follows this format:

Status
Schedule
Progress bar (if initial synchronization is running)
Backup state and estimated time to completion (if initial synchronization is running)

The backup status information fields are described below.

Field Description
Status This text indicates the overall status of backup for this computer. For example:
  • Initial synchronization pending

This status is displayed during the period following the set up of the new computer's backup configurations and before the initial backup synchronization starts. It is also displayed if any backup configuration has been changed but the changed configuration has not yet started.

  • Testing configuration & initial synchronization

This status is displayed during the initial backup synchronization for a new computer for a maximum of 24 hours.

If the initial synchronization is still running after 24 hours, this status changes to Initial synchronization.

This status indicates that LiveVault Online Backup Service is testing the computer configuration and backup configurations during the initial synchronization to determine whether or not the backup will be successful. During this time, LiveVault Online Backup Service is monitoring your backup for errors or indications that the backup may not be successful. For example, there may be issues if a computer is trying to back up too much data for the speed of your available Internet connection. If a problem is found, we will contact the primary technical contact for the computer.

Note: An initial synchronization may take a long time to complete, for example, several days, depending on the amount of data being backed up and the uplink speed of your Internet connection.

  • Initial synchronization

This status is displayed after 24 hours while the initial synchronization is running for the first time for any or all backup configurations on this computer. It is also displayed if someone changed which files or directories are being backed up under any configuration.

Note: An initial synchronization may take a long time to complete, for example, several days, depending on the amount of data being backed up and the uplink speed of your Internet connection.

  • Synchronizing

Following the completion of the initial synchronization, this status is displayed when any backup configuration is synchronizing. A synchronization runs each time a backup starts, for example, if you schedule backup to run nightly, instead of 24x7 or when an Agent reconnects following a prolonged disconnection from LiveVault Online Backup Service.

  • System operating normally

Following the completion of the initial synchronization, this status is displayed when all backup configurations are running in continuous mode or are scheduled to run in the future.

  • Disconnected

This status is displayed if the computer has been disconnected from LiveVault Online Backup Service for more than 15 minutes.

  • Backup is suspended

This status is displayed while backup is temporarily stopped (suspended). Backup remains in this state until you resume it.

In addition, should a problem other than a disconnect occur which disrupts your service, a message is displayed here.

Schedule This text indicates when backup will run on the computer.

If all backup configurations are set to run on the same schedule, then that schedule is displayed. For example:

  • 7x24

  • Evenings/Weekends

However, if configurations are set to run on different schedules, then Schedules vary is displayed here.

Progress bar This graphical progress bar indicates what percentage of the initial backup synchronization has completed. The percentage is figured across all data being backed up for this computer.

This bar will not be displayed after initial synchronization completes.

Backup state This text provides information about the state of backup on the system.

The following text is always displayed :

n of n backups currently running

This text specifies the number of backup configurations that are currently running out of the total number of backup configurations defined. For example, 2 of 2 backups currently running.

If appropriate, one or more of the following additional lines is appended to the above text:

  • n scheduled to execute

This text specifies the number of backup configurations that are scheduled to run in the future.

  • synchronization estimated complete in <time>

This text is displayed while an initial synchronization is running for all, or at least one of the backup configurations.

It specifies how long the initial synchronization will run until it completes for all configurations on this computer. If multiple backup configurations are running initial synchronizations, this is the estimated completion for the configuration that will take the longest to run.

An initial synchronization will run the first time a backup configuration runs, and also following a change to the list of files and directories that the configuration is to back up for a full backup of only those files which have not been previously backed up by any configuration.

The estimated completion information is based on a prescan of the data to be backed up, and is dynamically updated to maintain accuracy.

This estimate will be readjusted as necessary following disconnect and reconnect occurrences.

  • n suspended

This text specifies the number of backup configurations that have been suspended by Customer Service due to a backup issue (the issue and this action would have been previously discussed with either a technical contact for this computer or another representative of your company).

Restore jobs This text provides a count of the restore jobs that have run in the past week and their current or final status. The counts includes both Network restore jobs and Media restore jobs.

The following counts are provided:

  • n Restore Jobs Running

This indicates the number of restore jobs that are currently active.

  • n Restore Jobs Completed

This indicates the number of restore jobs that have completed in the past week.

  • n Restore Jobs Failed

This indicates the number of restore jobs that did not complete successfully. This includes jobs that failed due to a problem or error, as well as cancelled jobs.

Action column
This column displays buttons that you can click to perform actions on a computer. Only one button is available for a computer. The available button corresponds to the computer's current state.

A computer moves through a series of states in a natural progression as it gets added to LiveVault Online Backup Service and backup is configured. If you cannot take an action on the computer, this column is either blank or contains a message (for example, Pending Security Authorization).

Certain management capabilities are required to perform associated actions on computers. If you have been assigned the required capability, the Action button is available. However, if you have not been assigned the required capability, then the associated Action button is disabled. For example, to add a new computer you must have been assigned the capability User can add, edit, and remove computers; otherwise, the Add Computer button is disabled when you log in to MyLiveVault.

Button Description
