System Requirements

Your computer must meet the following system requirements in order to effectively utilize the LiveVault Online Backup Service.

Operating system:

Windows Server 2003 (Standard, Enterprise, or Web Edition)
Windows Storage Server 2003
Windows 2000 (Professional, Server, or Advanced Server)
Windows NT 4.0 (Server or Workstation) with SP5 or higher
Windows XP
Microsoft Server Appliance Kit (SAK)

File system:

FAT, FAT-32, NTFS or NTFS 5.0

Note: LiveVault Online Backup Service does not support Encrypting File System (EFS) or Direct File System drives (or the RAW file system)

CPU:

Pentium II or faster CPU technology

Note: After initial synchronization completes, LiveVault Online Backup Service CPU usage is generally less than 5%. Actual CPU usage depends on processor speed and data load.

Additional RAM:

32 MB of free memory under normal load

Available
disk space:

150 MB or 5% free disk space (whichever is greater)

Internet
connection:

A continuously available Internet connection with an upload speed of at least 56 Kbps.

Required upload speed is based on total data to back up and average daily data change rate; minimum recommended is 20 Kbps per GB of data to back up (based on a 5% daily change rate). For example:

Total Backed Up Data Per Site Bandwidth (upstream)
6 GB 128 Kbps
20 GB 384 Kbps
60 GB 1.0 Mbps
80 GB 1.5 Mbps

See Understanding Backup Bandwidth Usage for more information about bandwidth usage.

Maximum single file size:

30 GB

Firewalls

LiveVault Online Backup Service Agents use a fixed TCP port to communicate with the LiveVault Internet Gateway (LVIG). When you install the Agent software, a port selection utility determines which TCP port to use and configures the port.

If your Agent is not able to connect with either of its LVIGs, your firewall may be the source of the problem. If your firewall is the problem, then you must modify your firewall to allow the Agent to establish a session with its LVIG.

For more information about firewall configuration for LiveVault Online Backup Service, see Firewall Configuration for Use with Agents.

Proxy servers

LiveVault Online Backup Service can be set up in a Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0/ISA 2000 environment where:

  • The LiveVault Online Backup Service Agent machine is always "inside" the Proxy Server.

  • The LiveVault Online Backup Service Agent machine is a Winsock Proxy Client.

For more information about using MS Proxy Server 2.0/ISA 2000 with LiveVault Online Backup Service, see Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 or Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000.

If your Agent computers are behind both an MS Proxy Server and a firewall, contact Customer Service for assistance.

If you are using a different vendor's proxy server, contact Customer Service for assistance. We have not tested with other vendors' proxy servers; however, LiveVault Online Backup Service has been set up to work with some other proxy servers that provide a client-side component with a Winsock proxy filter.

Proxy firewalls

Agent computers and LVIGs cannot communicate through a Proxy firewall. However many Proxy firewalls can be modified to allow access. If you are using a Proxy firewall, contact Customer Service for assistance.
