LiveVault Online Backup Service, digital certificates are created for and issued to that individual
computer, and are installed during the Agent software setup. The Internet
Gateway and backup servers that receive the Agent computer's data also have
their own unique digital certificates. These digital certificates enable the
Agent computer and its associated Internet Gateway and backup servers to
authenticate their identities to each other and to certify that they are to be
trusted before they exchange data.
- Directory Service Restore Mode (DSRM)
- DSRM is a Microsoft Windows safe
mode. When performing a disaster recovery for an Agent running Windows 2000
Server or Advanced Server, Windows Server 2003, or Windows XP, it is recommended
that you use DSRM
mode. By using DSRM
mode, you do not have to install the Service Pack and hotfixes that were running on the Agent system prior
to the recovery; instead they are recovered during the restore.
- disaster recovery
- A disaster recovery is a response to a declared disaster or a regional disaster.
It is the restoration or recovery of an entire Agent computer. As part of a disaster recovery,
the Agent computer is rebuilt, and operating systems installed and configured. The Agent software
may be reinstalled (if the disaster recovery restores are delivered over the
Internet). Then the Agent computer's data and Windows System State/registry is restored,
either over the Internet or to
physical media which is delivered to the client at their normal site of operations
or a designated alternate site. See also restore.
- DR
- See disaster recovery.

restored. See also include.
- exclusions
- File selection rules that identify specific files and file
types that you do not want to backup. See also rules.
- Files and Directories backup configuration
- A general backup configuration that is automatically
created for each computer. By default, this configuration backs up everything
on the computer, including the Windows System State or registry.
However, it will not back up those files and
directories that are specifically excluded from backup, or those files
and directories that are specified on other database backup configurations.
This backup configuration is always created, even if all files and
directories are specifically excluded from the backup configuration. See also
backup configuration, database backup configuration, Exchange backup
configuration, exclude.

problems that would interfere with the LiveVault Online Backup Service installation and operation. It
runs automatically during the Agent software setup, and can be run manually at other times.
- historic file versions
- Older versions of backed up files. These files have the same name as files
currently on the Agent computers, but they have been superseded by more recent
versions of the file.
You can request a restore of historic files in MyLiveVault.
See also Time-Slice Restore.
- include
- To specify that the selected file or directory is to be backed up or
restored. See also exclude.
- initial backup
- See initial synchronization.
- initial synchronization
- The first time data is backed up from an Agent computer to the backup server.
Initial synchronization occurs the first time the client configures backup for a newly
added computer. During
the initial synchronization, a copy of each file and directory selected to be backed up
is replicated to the backup server, creating an exact image of the files and
file structure. The initial
synchronization runs until the first copy of all
data selected for backup has been replicated to the backup server. Depending on
the amount of data that you are backing up and the bandwidth available from your
computer, this can take from several hours to multiple days. Later, when you
modify which files get backed up by existing configurations, an initial synchronization occurs of only those files which have not been previously backed up by any
configuration. See also backup
configuration, replicate,
synchronize/synchronization.
- Internet Gateway server (LVIG)
- A server that sits between the Internet and the backup servers. Its purpose
is to ensure secure and resilient connections between the Agent computer and
backup server. See also Agent computer, backup server.

policy, but enables your company to set a stricter password policy if
appropriate.
- physical media
- See media.
- prescan
- In order to estimate the amount of time for a backup configuration's initial synchronization, LiveVault Online Backup Service quickly scans the data to be replicated.
The prescan operation only runs the first time the data is backed up, and it runs in parallel with the
backup operation. Also, when a restore
is requested, LiveVault Online Backup Service runs a prescan operation on the files specified to be
restored. This information is used
to determine the delivery method (for an Automatic restore), or to estimate the amount of time required
for a Network restore. See also initial
synchronization, restore.
