Understanding Restore Bandwidth Usage

You can monitor a computer's bandwidth usage to see how much bandwidth your Network restores are using over time to deliver your data over the Internet.

What is restore bandwidth usage?

Restore bandwidth usage is the amount of downstream bandwidth that LiveVault Online Backup Service uses to restore requested files from the backup server to your computer.

LiveVault Online Backup Service will use as much available network bandwidth as it needs to restore your data, up to a maximum of 12 megabytes per second (12 MBps).

Bandwidth and restore performance

Your Network restore performance is limited by your connection bandwidth speed and quality up to speeds of approximately 7 Mbps. At speeds faster than 7 Mbps, other factors may limit your Network restore times. The time elapsed before a restore begins is variable and largely determined by whether current or historic data is being restored.

The following table lists approximate restore times after a restore has started for various bandwidths and data sizes:

Bandwidth (Kbps) Total Restored Data (MB)
20 100 1000 4000 10000

Time (in hours)

384 0.1 0.5 4.8 19.3 48.3
1000 0.1 0.2 1.9 7.4 18.5
1500 0.1 0.1 1.3 5 12.4
45000 0.1 0.1 0.2 0.8 2

These restore estimates assume at least 60% of the subscribed bandwidth is available for the restore, and that you are writing new files to the disk (as opposed to overwriting existing files on the disk). If the restore is overwriting existing files on the disk, your Network restore performance may decrease to approximately 4 Mbps. Also, network performance, data compressibility, and the computer you are restoring to may affect restore times.

We recommend contacting Customer Service if you have questions about bandwidth usage.

Interpreting the Bandwidth Usage chart

Use the 24 hour or 7 day inbound Bandwidth Usage charts in MyLiveVault to identify the amount of network bandwidth being consumed by LiveVault Online Backup Service for the Network restore job across time.

The chart graphs the bandwidth usage for the Network restore job where:

  • The Data transferred value indicates the amount of data transferred from the backup server to your computer.

  • The Time of usage value indicates when the data was transferred; for example, 3 hrs ago.

Note: The inbound bandwidth charts show the amount of data transferred from the backup server to your Agent computer, primarily showing data being restored. However, you will also observe a minor amount of control data that is transferred during backup operations.

The chart is updated with current data every 3 minutes.

For example, you may see a Bandwidth Usage chart similar to the following:
